In developing CapturaTalk our intent is to make a product that empowers an individual with difficulties accessing text with the ability to use a simple hand held device as a reading accessibility tool at anytime, anywhere. Our goal is to enable users to take a picture of a word, a paragraph of instruction or even a whole page of text and have that text converted into both plain and audible text. In addition you can use the power of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary to access definitions for captured words. As with captured text, definitions can be read out loud by CapturaTalk.
There are three main steps involved in turning something you see into audible text:
- Capture the desired text. This can be done by taking a picture, opening an image or by highlighting text within supported applications.
- Convert the text, probably in image format, into plain text. CapturaTalk achieves this this via a method known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
- Have the text read out loud. CapturaTalk achieves this using a technology known as Text to Speech.
